L3Harris Opens New Rhode Island Facility to Boost Undersea Warfare Training Systems

Defense contractor L3Harris Technologies has officially expanded its maritime footprint by opening a brand-new, 50,000-square-foot production facility located at ProvPort in Providence, Rhode Island. Representing a $6 million strategic investment, this cutting-edge site is specifically designed to support the integration, testing, and production of sophisticated undersea training ranges for the United States Navy and its international partner-nation fleets. The facility marks a significant milestone in bolstering the nation's maritime defense industrial base amidst escalating global geopolitical competition.

Strategic Investment and Maritime Readiness

The demand for comprehensive undersea training and operational readiness has reached historic highs due to evolving underwater threats and peer-adversary submarine advancements. Nino DiCosmo, president of Maritime, Space and Mission Systems at L3Harris, emphasized that the ProvPort facility positions the company to address these surging requirements with unprecedented speed and scale. By leveraging Rhode Island's prime coastal location and robust maritime infrastructure, L3Harris aims to streamline the manufacturing process for critical naval training architecture.

Expanding a Decades-Long Legacy in Rhode Island

L3Harris maintains a rich, decades-long heritage in the region, having originally established a footprint in Ashaway back in 1991. That initial facility focused heavily on delivering critical undersea sensor systems and advanced military sonar capabilities for surface combatants and submarines. The expansion into ProvPort deepens this legacy, drawing praise from key congressional leaders including Senator Jack Reed, ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. The new hub is expected to generate high-skilled jobs and foster tighter collaboration with local academic institutions and small businesses.

Advancing Undersea Warfare and Autonomous Capabilities

Beyond traditional training ranges, L3Harris continues to heavily prioritize next-generation undersea warfare technologies. Notably, the firm secured a strategic contract from the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) for its innovative Torpedo Tube Launch and Recovery system. This technology enables submarines to deploy and retrieve autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) seamlessly, vastly enhancing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities in contested maritime domains. The new ProvPort facility will serve as a cornerstone for these broader technological advancements.
