Chinese commercial aerospace company Landspace has announced ambitious plans to conduct a reflight test of its recovered Zhuque-3 first-stage booster within just six months. This aggressive timeline follows the historic and successful vertical landing of the booster on August 18 in Minqin County, Gansu province. The achievement places Landspace in an elite global tier as the third entity worldwide—and the first in China—to successfully land an orbital-class booster on landing legs on land, following milestones set by American firms SpaceX and Blue Origin.

Technical Improvements and Successful Recovery

The successful landing of the Zhuque-3 Y2 booster represents a remarkable engineering comeback following the failure of the inaugural flight's booster recovery attempt roughly eight and a half months prior. In response to the earlier setback, Landspace engineers implemented critical technical upgrades. These modifications included reducing the number of engines utilized during the terminal landing burn to simplify the propulsion dynamics and enhance reliability. Furthermore, the team integrated a predicted landing point into the onboard autonomous safety control system and significantly upgraded the thermal protection systems to endure extreme reentry heating and structural loads.

Orbital Payloads and Space-Based Computing

Beyond the launcher milestone, the second Zhuque-3 flight served as an important testbed for advanced orbital technologies. The mission successfully delivered the Honghu-03 satellite to orbit, which carried China Mobile's groundbreaking 'Space-Based Intelligent Computing Payload 1.0'. Developed in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Computing Technology and Landspace’s satellite manufacturing affiliate Hongqing Technology, the payload successfully tested a domestically sourced lightweight satellite-borne core network and onboard agent software. This experiment highlights the rapid convergence of Chinese commercial launch capabilities with strategic distributed edge computing and space-based infrastructure initiatives.

Implications for China's Reusable Launch Market

The announcement of a rapid reflight schedule underscores Landspace's broader strategic goals to achieve a high launch cadence and significantly lower the cost of access to space. The company's ultimate design target requires the Zhuque-3 first stage to be fully reusable at least 20 times. Landspace operates within an increasingly competitive and state-backed Chinese commercial space ecosystem that includes numerous firms such as Space Pioneer, Galactic Energy, Deep Blue Aerospace, and Orienspace, all aggressively racing to operationalize reusable rocket technologies and challenge traditional launch paradigms.
