Rocket Lab Secures U.S. Space Force Contract for 2027 Space Data Network Test

Rocket Lab will utilize its Photon spacecraft in 2027 to test secure optical communications and interoperability for the U.S. Space Force's Space Data Network. The mission is part of a broader military initiative to connect multi-vendor commercial satellites with a SpaceX-built network backbone.

KISA CEVAP & HABERİN ÖZETİ

Rocket Lab will utilize its Photon spacecraft in 2027 to test secure optical communications and interoperability for the U.S. Space Force's Space Data Network. The mission is part of a broader military initiative to connect multi-vendor commercial satellites with a SpaceX-built network backbone.

Rocket Lab Secures U.S. Space Force Contract for 2027 Space Data Network Test

In a significant step toward achieving multi-vendor military space interoperability, Rocket Lab has revealed comprehensive plans to test the U.S. Space Force’s Space Data Network (SDN) in orbit by 2027. The initiative highlights the military's growing reliance on commercial space capabilities to build a resilient, interconnected architecture capable of routing massive volumes of tactical data securely across various orbital assets.

The $12 Million Photon Spacecraft Demonstration

Under a $12 million contract awarded by the Space Systems Command, Rocket Lab will configure one of its versatile Photon spacecraft with advanced optical communications and specialized networking hardware. This payload is specifically designed to prove that commercial satellites from different suppliers can seamlessly connect and communicate with the military's central network backbone. The current award fully funds the critical design and rigorous ground testing phases required ahead of the 2027 orbital flight demonstration.

Building the Space Data Network Architecture

The Space Data Network is a vital military communications architecture engineered to facilitate high-speed data transfer among various satellites and between orbital assets and ground stations. The foundation of this network was laid when SpaceX secured a massive $2.29 billion contract to construct the Space Data Network Backbone (SDN-B), utilizing a proliferated constellation equipped with optical laser links. However, to prevent vendor lock-in and dependency on proprietary technologies, the Space Force is actively pursuing common interface standards that allow third-party spacecraft to plug into the primary military backbone.

Multi-Vendor Collaboration in the SDN Consortium

Rocket Lab is one of five industry leaders selected by the Space Systems Command for a collective $60 million effort to demonstrate multi-vendor connectivity. Alongside Rocket Lab, industry heavyweights including Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and York Space Systems each received parallel $12 million contracts. These companies collectively form the Space Data Network consortium, a collaborative body tasked with resolving complex technical and architectural challenges to ensure secure, resilient, and interoperable military space communications in future conflicts.

  • Photon spacecraft equipped with advanced optical communications.
  • Demonstration scheduled for orbital flight testing in 2027.
  • Part of a $60 million multi-vendor military integration initiative.
