Recent commercial satellite imagery and intelligence analyses indicate that Russia has been aggressively expanding the dedicated launch infrastructure for its long-range one-way attack drones. This massive buildout includes newly constructed extended rails designed to accommodate advanced, larger variants of the Geran drone family. By dispersing these launch sites closer to Ukraine and Belarus, Moscow is cementing its ability to stage, manage, and execute high-volume drone strikes while stretching the defensive architecture of its adversaries.

Spreading Infrastructure and New Launch Sites

Investigative findings highlighted by defense intelligence firms reveal at least ten Russian sites featuring newly constructed or significantly expanded drone-launch infrastructure. Among these, dozens of launch rails have been identified, with a notable portion specifically engineered to support newer, jet-powered Geran-type variants. These facilities range from converted civilian airfields and historical military bases to remote installations specifically adapted for mass drone staging. For instance, facilities like the one in Oryol's Tsymbulova region feature extensive launch positions, heavy storage structures capable of holding over a thousand drones, and robust support ecosystems designed for sustained operational tempos.

The Evolution to Jet-Powered Geran Variants

The transition toward longer launch rails directly correlates with the introduction of Russia's newer Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered munitions. Unlike the propeller-driven Shahed-136/Geran-2 models, these jet-powered systems fly faster, operate at higher altitudes, and carry significantly larger payloads, effectively addressing previous limitations in destructive power. Although their range may be shorter than their propeller-driven predecessors, their increased speed and survivability allow them to penetrate modern air defense networks more effectively. Depending on the operational profile of the newer jet drones, parts of Poland and the entirety of the Baltic States fall within theoretical operational ranges.
