US Army Prepares Ground Jammer for 2027 Production Amid Shift to Commercial Tech

The United States Army is advancing its long-range ground jammer project, known as the Terrestrial Layer System-Echelons Above Brigade (TLS-EAB), toward full-scale production slated for fiscal year 2027. Service officials highlighted this major milestone at the recent TechNet Augusta conference, marking a significant evolution from the program's initial concept phase launched over five years ago. Driven by the rapidly changing modern operational environment, the military has fundamentally altered its acquisition and design strategies.

Shifting Toward Commercial-First and Modular Architecture

Initially envisioned in 2020 as an all-in-one signals intelligence (SIGINT) and electronic warfare (EW) system tailored for higher echelons like divisions and corps, the program faced shifting technological and tactical requirements. Recognizing that rigid, legacy requirements quickly become obsolete against sophisticated adversaries, the Army adopted a commercial-first mindset. The program was subsequently divided into dedicated signals intelligence and electronic warfare variants, enhancing operational flexibility and deployment speed.

The newly refined TLS-EW system now fits into a portable, modular enclosure that can be loaded onto various military platforms rather than being permanently integrated into a single vehicle type. Additional variants designed for sheltered setups and tactical vehicles such as Humvees and Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) remain actively in the prototyping phase. These modular capabilities were rigorously validated during operational exercises like Project Convergence, demonstrating profound utility in Indo-Pacific scenarios.

Expanding Aerial Electronic Warfare and Long-Range Capabilities

Complementing the ground-based terrestrial layer, the Army's airborne electronic warfare enterprise is undergoing a parallel transformation. Following a strategic pivot away from the Multi-Function Electronic Warfare Air Large (MFEW-AL) platform, the service is broadening its tactical scope. Officials are focusing on versatile payloads capable of integration across a variety of assets, including high-altitude balloons and small, medium, and large unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

As part of this broader modernization roadmap, the Long-Range Airborne Electronic Warfare (LRAEW) platform is emerging as a premier commercial solution. Designed to provide non-kinetic capabilities and robust situational awareness, LRAEW will be integrated initially onto Gray Eagle drones. Three distinct Army units are scheduled to receive these advanced airborne electronic warfare kits during the first quarter of 2027, significantly amplifying multi-domain operational readiness.

Strategic Implications for Multi-Domain Operations

The continuous fielding of advanced terrestrial and aerial electronic warfare systems addresses a critical capability gap following years of post-Cold War divestment. Modern adversaries have proven exceptionally adept at exploiting the electromagnetic spectrum, geolocating emissions, and denying secure communications. By equipping commanders at every echelon with integrated sensors and attack capabilities, the Army ensures that the electromagnetic spectrum is treated as vital terrain that can be actively maneuvered, defended, and dominated in future conflicts.
