The United States military is advancing its artillery modernization strategy by turning to proven international solutions. The US Army has officially selected Hanwha Defense USA and its wheeled K9 platform to deliver prototypes for a highly anticipated self-propelled howitzer competition, marking a significant step in the service's ongoing efforts to upgrade its indirect fire capabilities.
Accelerated Prototype Delivery and Combat Testing
According to the official announcement, the agreement provides for the accelerated delivery of six prototype Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) systems, with an accompanying option for an additional 12 units. These platforms will be handed over to soldiers who will put them through rigorous operational experiments.
The testing phase is designed to assess key performance metrics:
- System reliability under simulated combat conditions
- Overall operational performance and tactical mobility
- Supportability and maintenance logistics in the field
Data and insights gathered from these experiments will directly shape senior leaders' decisions regarding future full-scale fielding and procurement, potentially reaching a total value of $233 million for the winning supplier.
A Highly Competitive Global Field
Hanwha Defense USA, a prominent subsidiary of South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace, secured this phase by pitching its advanced wheeled K9 variant. The competition drew major defense industry heavyweights offering some of the world's most capable artillery systems:
- Elbit America teamed up with Anduril and Oshkosh Defense to propose the SIGMA platform.
- Leonardo DRS (the US subsidiary of Italy's Leonardo DRS) partnered with European defense specialist KNDS to offer a variant of the Caesar howitzer.
- Rheinmetall entered through its US subsidiary with the Remote Controlled Howitzer (RCH) 155 mm.
- BAE Systems proposed the Archer system through its American subsidiary.
To support its growing footprint in the United States, Hanwha Defense USA is currently establishing a new production, integration, and test facility in Opelika, Alabama. This expansion mirrors the company's recent global success, having secured numerous K9 export deals with nations such as Poland, Norway, Finland, and Romania.
Overcoming Past Artillery Development Hurdles
The pursuit of a new artillery system comes after decades of cancelled programs and technical roadblocks for the US Army. The service is looking to replace aging systems, including the towed M777 howitzers and the tracked M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzers, which trace their roots back to the 1960s.
Over the intervening decades, several ambitious modernization attempts failed to materialize. The XM2001 Crusader program was cancelled in 2002, and the Non-Line-of-Sight Cannon was scrapped in the late 2000s under the Future Combat Systems initiative. More recently, the service pursued the Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) project, which sought to mount a massive 30-foot, 58-caliber gun tube onto a Paladin chassis. However, the Army halted the ERCA effort in 2024 after live-fire testing revealed excessive wear and tear on the cannon tube.
By pivoting toward existing, mature global designs rather than starting a costly new clean-sheet development, the Army hopes to rapidly field a reliable and highly mobile solution that meets the demands of modern near-peer conflict.
