Blue Origin Expands Cape Canaveral Infrastructure with Second New Glenn Launch Pad

Blue Origin has revealed plans to add a second launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to accommodate the larger New Glenn 9x4 heavy-lift rocket. The announcement follows ongoing reconstruction efforts at the primary pad after a static-fire test anomaly.

Blue Origin Expands Cape Canaveral Infrastructure with Second New Glenn Launch Pad

In a major development for American commercial space and national security launch infrastructure, Blue Origin has officially disclosed comprehensive plans to expand its operational footprint at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor announced the addition of a second launch pad at Launch Complex 36, specifically tailored to support an upgraded, heavier variant of its flagship heavy-lift launch vehicle.

Expanding Launch Complex 36 for the New Glenn 9x4

The newly unveiled pad, designated as LC-36B, will be meticulously engineered to handle the New Glenn 9x4, a substantially more powerful iteration of the original rocket design. While the standard vehicle utilizes a seven-engine first stage and a two-engine upper stage, the upgraded 9x4 variant will boast nine BE-4 engines on its booster and four BE-3U engines on its upper stage. This configuration promises significantly enhanced payload capacity to low Earth orbit and geostationary trajectories, serving critical commercial and national security space missions.

Rebuilding LC-36A Following Test Anomaly

The expansion announcement comes as Blue Origin simultaneously accelerates the reconstruction of its primary launch facility, now designated as LC-36A. The original pad sustained significant structural damage following an unexpected anomaly during a static-fire test of the New Glenn rocket. Company leadership, including CEO Dave Limp, has emphasized that returning LC-36A to operational status and achieving flight readiness remain the absolute highest priorities for the enterprise.

  • Rebuilt LC-36A dedicated to the standard New Glenn configuration.
  • Implementation of an innovative hybrid horizontal/vertical concept of operations (CONOPS).
  • Testing of vertical stacking operations and wind-damping mechanisms at LC-11.

New Concept of Operations and Payload Facilities

To mitigate risks and streamline future processing, Blue Origin is transitioning to a hybrid operational workflow. Under this new CONOPS, only the booster stage will be transported to the pad horizontally before being elevated into a vertical position. The upper stage and sensitive payloads will be transported separately in a vertical orientation, then hoisted and mated using specialized cranes.

Furthermore, the infrastructure expansion encompasses a dedicated vertical integration facility and a state-of-the-art payload processing facility. The U.S. Space Force previously awarded Blue Origin a substantial $78.2 million contract to advance these crucial processing capabilities, underscoring the strategic partnership between the military and commercial launch providers in securing resilient access to space.
