KISA CEVAP & HABERİN ÖZETİ

Defense startup Castelion has revealed the first look at its affordable Blackbeard hypersonic weapon while securing $1 billion in fresh financing. The company aims to mass-produce the system to drastically scale up U.S. military stockpiles.

Castelion Unveils Blackbeard Low-Cost Hypersonic Weapon Alongside $1 Billion Funding

Defense startup Castelion, founded by former SpaceX personnel, has officially provided the first public view of its Blackbeard hypersonic weapon. This unveiling coincides with the company's announcement of securing $1 billion in new financing, consisting of $800 million in equity and $250 million in committed funding, which values the firm at approximately $13 billion. Traditional hypersonic weapons offer incredible speed and maneuverability, but their exorbitant costs have historically limited them to small inventories and restricted use against high-priority targets. Castelion is attempting to radically shift this paradigm by engineering a lower-cost hypersonic missile capable of being manufactured and deployed in massive quantities.

Design and Technical Architecture of Blackbeard

A profile photograph taken at Castelion's headquarters reveals a configuration featuring a ballistic missile-like booster topped with an unpowered hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV). The booster accelerates the HGV to the required altitude and velocity before releasing it to glide toward its intended target. Unlike air-breathing cruise missiles, this ballistic boost-glide approach allows the munition to exceed Mach 5 speeds reliably. While exact performance figures remain closely guarded, previous company disclosures suggest an operational range approaching 500 miles. Both the booster and the HGV are equipped with cruciform stabilization fins, while the glide vehicle incorporates a distinct chine line along its body and a sharp, beaklike nose profile.

Multi-Service Integration and Production Strategy

The U.S. military is aggressively pursuing the integration of Blackbeard across multiple domains to build critical magazine depth. The U.S. Army plans to field a ground-launched variant capable of utilizing mobile platforms such as the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and uncrewed launchers to strike time-sensitive, moving, or heavily fortified targets. Concurrently, the U.S. Navy awarded Castelion a contract to integrate the weapon onto F/A-18E/F Super Hornet carrier-based strike fighters, targeting early operational capability by 2027. This multi-service adaptability underscores the Pentagon's broader strategy to acquire thousands of affordable standoff weapons over the coming years to deter peer adversaries.

Scaling Manufacturing Through Project Ranger

A cornerstone of Castelion’s business model is its extensive manufacturing footprint centered around the Project Ranger campus in Sandoval County, New Mexico. Spanning roughly 1,000 acres, this facility is designed to serve as the largest dedicated hypersonic missile production site in the United States. By combining private venture capital with government backing, Castelion intends to transition from rapid flight testing to industrial-scale manufacturing. As the Department of Defense pushes for low-cost, mass-producible precision munitions ahead of potential great-power conflicts, the success of the Blackbeard program will test whether a startup can permanently reshape the defense-industrial base.
