The Italian Air Force is actively reviewing a potential acquisition of advanced Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II guidance kits from the United States to significantly bolster its counter-drone capabilities. Approved recently by the U.S. Department of State via a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) valued at up to $364 million, the package encompasses over 5,000 guidance sections, launchers, warheads, rocket motors, and comprehensive technical support. An AMRAAM can cost upwards of ten times more than the target it destroys. The United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) successfully fast-tracked the integration of the APKWS onto its Eurofighter fleet following a rapid two-month testing and deployment cycle. British military officials highlighted that the system grants pilots a highly accurate engagement option against aerial threats at a fraction of traditional missile costs.
