The Italian Air Force is considering the acquisition of U.S. APKWS laser-guidance kits to convert unguided rockets into precision drone interceptors. This potential $364 million Foreign Military Sale aims to provide a cost-effective alternative to expensive air-to-air missiles for homeland defense.

Italy Evaluates US APKWS Guidance Kits for Cost-Effective Drone Interception

The Italian Air Force is actively reviewing a potential acquisition of advanced Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II guidance kits from the United States to significantly bolster its counter-drone capabilities. Approved recently by the U.S. Department of State via a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) valued at up to $364 million, the package encompasses over 5,000 guidance sections, launchers, warheads, rocket motors, and comprehensive technical support. As modern military conflicts increasingly rely on inexpensive loitering munitions and unmanned aerial vehicles, conventional air defense economics have become heavily strained.

The Economic Challenge of Counter-UAS Operations

Modern air defense currently faces a severe cost-asymmetry dilemma. Utilizing high-end air-to-air missiles, such as the AMRAAM, to neutralize low-cost consumer-grade or mass-produced military drones places an unsustainable financial burden on defense budgets. An AMRAAM can cost upwards of ten times more than the target it destroys. To mitigate this fiscal drain, militaries are pivoting toward guided rocket solutions that bridge the gap between cost and precision. The APKWS system effectively converts traditional unguided munitions into laser-guided precision weapons by inserting a guidance section equipped with four fold-out wings and optical seekers between the warhead and the rocket motor.

Integration with Eurofighter Typhoon Fleets

While Italian defense sources emphasize that no official contract has been signed yet and the technology remains under evaluation, the primary platform slated for this integration is the Italian Air Force's Eurofighter Typhoon fleet. These multirole fighters are currently tasked with safeguarding European airspace against frequent drone incursions. The operational need for such capabilities was recently underscored when an Italian Eurofighter operating under NATO air policing mandates successfully intercepted and shot down an unauthorized drone violating Latvian airspace.

Strategic Precedents and NATO Allied Adoption

Italy is not alone in recognizing the operational value of low-cost precision strike kits. The United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) successfully fast-tracked the integration of the APKWS onto its Eurofighter fleet following a rapid two-month testing and deployment cycle. British military officials highlighted that the system grants pilots a highly accurate engagement option against aerial threats at a fraction of traditional missile costs. If Italy finalizes the procurement, it will further standardize counter-UAS tactics among key NATO allies, ensuring enhanced interoperability and robust regional deterrence against asymmetric aerial threats.
