Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has revealed the advanced F-110 Flight II Integrated Air and Missile Defense frigate concept at DALO 2026. The new warship design boasts a significantly upgraded 64-cell vertical launch system and a more powerful AN/SPY-7 radar suite for high-intensity naval combat.

Navantia Unveils Advanced F-110 Flight II IAMD Frigate with Enhanced Missile Capacity

At the recent DALO Industry Days 2026, European shipbuilding giant Navantia officially unveiled its latest naval warfare concept: the F-110 Flight II Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) frigate. Building upon the foundational success of the Spanish Navy's current F-110 program, this advanced iteration is specifically engineered to counter increasingly complex and high-intensity aerial, surface, and ballistic missile threats in modern maritime battle spaces.

Enhanced Air Defense and Radar Capabilities

The core of the new F-110 Flight II design lies in its formidable sensor and combat management architecture. Navantia has integrated a much more powerful variant of the Lockheed Martin AN/SPY-7 solid-state active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. This cutting-edge radar system provides continuous 360-degree surveillance, superior target acquisition, and precision tracking capabilities against low-observable aircraft, supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles, and theater ballistic threats.

Expanded Strike and Defensive Firepower

A critical limitation of traditional multi-role frigates has historically been their missile magazine depth. To address this, Navantia has drastically expanded the ordnance capacity of the Flight II concept. The warship features a heavy-duty 64-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS) configuration. This extensive VLS layout enables the frigate to carry a mixed payload of long-range air defense missiles, tactical strike munitions, and anti-submarine rockets, ensuring sustained combat endurance during high-intensity peer conflicts.

Strategic Significance and Future Naval Warfare

The unveiling of the F-110 Flight II IAMD underscores Navantia's strategic commitment to delivering blue-water naval assets capable of coalition-level air defense operations. As navies worldwide pivot back toward high-intensity peer warfare and fleet-protection missions, warships equipped with robust sensor arrays and deep-magazine VLS cells like the F-110 Flight II are becoming indispensable. This design positions Navantia strongly in the global defense export market for next-generation surface combatants.
