SpaceWERX Selects 11 Companies for $562M Military Space Tech Funding

The United States Space Force continues to aggressively bridge the gap between commercial innovation and military capability. SpaceWERX, the innovation arm of the Space Force, has officially selected 11 companies for a new round of public-private funding agreements. Announced at the Fed Supernova conference in Austin, Texas, this strategic initiative is designed to propel cutting-edge space technologies past the traditional prototyping phase and directly into operational military use.

Scaling Military Space Technologies Through STRATFI

The newly announced agreements are projected to draw a combined $562.5 million from a combination of government organizations and private sector investors. This capital injection is being executed through the Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) program. STRATFI agreements can reach up to $60 million per company, leveraging a blended funding model that includes up to $15 million in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funds, matched by military customers and external private capital.

While these selections are not yet finalized contract awards, the chosen enterprises will immediately begin negotiating formal agreements alongside Space Force organizations. The goal is to establish rigorous milestones and demonstrate that their innovations can successfully satisfy stringent military requirements.

The 11 Selected Defense and Space Startups

The selected firms represent a diverse cross-section of the aerospace and defense technology sectors, focusing on everything from propulsion to space cybersecurity:

  • Agile Space Industries: Specializes in chemical propulsion systems and high-thrust thrusters to enable rapid satellite orbit changes.
  • Antares Nuclear: Develops factory-produced nuclear microreactors tailored for space and terrestrial defense applications.
  • EO Solutions: Focuses on space-domain-awareness sensors, directed-energy capabilities, and laser communications.
  • Hydrosat: Operates thermal-infrared satellites capable of detecting ground temperature signatures for intelligence operations.
  • Kall Morris (KMI Space): Builds orbital logistics and debris removal robotic systems.
  • Method Security: Develops specialized cybersecurity software to safeguard critical space-related infrastructure.
  • Muon Space: Designs satellite constellations for defense and environmental monitoring.
  • Scout Space: Provides optical sensors and autonomous software for in-orbit object detection.
  • Sedaro: Offers digital engineering and simulation software to create digital twins of military space systems.
  • Star Catcher Industries: Works on an orbital energy network utilizing optical power beaming for satellites.
  • ThinkOrbital: Develops in-orbit inspection, servicing, and robotic welding technologies.

Strategic Implications for National Security

Programs like STRATFI play an indispensable role in signaling defense demand to private investors and nimble startups. By mandating financial alignment between commercial entities, operational military customers, and third-party venture capital, the Space Force ensures that emerging technologies mature with a clear path toward scalability. As orbital congestion and geopolitical competition in space escalate, rapid integration of commercial ingenuity remains a top priority for maintaining American space dominance.
