Spire and PlanetiQ Secure NOAA Contracts for Advanced Space Weather Data

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has officially awarded substantial contracts to commercial satellite operators Spire Global and PlanetiQ to bolster terrestrial and space weather forecasting capabilities. Announced by the NOAA National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service Commercial Data Program, these strategic agreements highlight the growing reliance of government agencies on commercial space assets for critical environmental intelligence.

Commercial Space Partnerships and Contract Details

Under the newly awarded agreements, Spire Global secured a $3.7 million contract to deliver 4,600 daily global navigation satellite system (GNSS) profiles alongside 1,200 temporal resolution enhancements. These enhancements are vital for capturing rapid atmospheric fluctuations throughout the day. Simultaneously, PlanetiQ was awarded a $2.7 million contract to provide 4,200 GNSS profiles and 500 total electron content tracks daily, which are indispensable for accurate space weather predictions. Both companies are scheduled to supply this vital radio occultation data from September 18 through December 1, 2026.

Strategic Significance for Defense and Intelligence Operations

Accurate environmental and space weather monitoring is not only critical for civil meteorology but also serves a vital function in national security. NOAA routinely shares acquired commercial weather intelligence with the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, and NASA. These data streams feed directly into advanced numerical weather prediction models and military space weather applications. Enhanced situational awareness is paramount for maintaining satellite communications, missile tracking systems, and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) architectures against space weather disruptions and solar storms.

Future Expansion Through Massive IDIQ Vehicles

Looking ahead, NOAA is preparing to scale its integration of commercial capabilities. Following a request for proposals issued in May for commercial space-based environmental monitoring data, the agency plans to establish an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract vehicle. With a staggering ceiling of $2.35 billion over a 10-year period, this upcoming IDIQ aims to pilot, operationalize, and significantly expand the utilization of private sector innovations. By leveraging commercial speed and cost-efficiencies, U.S. defense and civil agencies will continue to enhance decision-support services across complex operational mission areas.
