KISA CEVAP & HABERİN ÖZETİ

The U.S. Army is actively pursuing the Affordable High Speed Strike (AHSS) missile program to acquire a low-cost, long-range weapon capable of striking targets over 1,000 kilometers away. This new initiative aims to provide mobile, ground-based forces with enhanced theater-level strike capabilities unconstrained by historical treaties.

U.S. Army Initiates Development of Affordable 1,000-Kilometer Strike Missile

The U.S. Army has officially embarked on a major initiative to develop a new class of long-range surface-to-surface weaponry. Designated as the Affordable High Speed Strike (AHSS) program, the effort focuses on acquiring a lower-cost strike missile capable of destroying high-value targets at distances exceeding 621 miles (1,000 kilometers). Highlighted recently at the Space & Missile Defense (SMD) Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, the AHSS project underscores the service's evolving doctrine to secure deep-strike dominance across dynamic theaters of operation.

Exploring Innovative Propulsion and Launcher Integration

Conceptual renderings showcased by the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Aviation & Missile Center (DEVCOM AvMC) revealed two distinctly different design pathways for the AHSS. One concept follows a traditional ballistic missile architecture equipped with stabilizing tail fins, while the alternative features an air-breathing propulsion system complete with a nose-mounted intake reminiscent of high-speed ramjets or scramjets. These prospective munitions are intended for deployment from both modern crewed platforms like the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and cutting-edge uncrewed launcher vehicles currently under development.

Strategic Drivers and the Post-INF Treaty Landscape

The strategic impetus behind the AHSS program is heavily rooted in the 2019 collapse of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, which previously restricted the deployment of ground-based missiles with ranges between 310 and 3,420 miles. Unburdened by these historical constraints, the Army aims to field responsive medium-range ballistic or cruise capabilities designed for offensive counter-air missions and theater-level neutralization of enemy air defenses. Furthermore, recent operational demands have depleted existing stockpiles of short-range tactical munitions, emphasizing the critical need for weapons that combine extended reach with high producibility and cost-efficiency.

Expanding Long-Range Arsenal and International Collaboration

The AHSS program runs parallel to other major modernization efforts, including the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) family, the Typhon launcher system, and the Dark Eagle hypersonic weapon. While systems like PrSM fulfill vital immediate requirements, the Army views AHSS as a unique opportunity to drastically reduce unit costs—contrasting with expensive legacy items—while engaging international partners such as Australia. As the program progresses through its budget and design phases, it promises to reshape the tactical flexibility and distributed operational capacity of modern land forces.
