U.S. Space Force Awards $28M Contract for Tactically Responsive Space Maneuverability

The United States military continues to accelerate its capabilities in orbital domains, with the U.S. Space Force significantly expanding its partnership with commercial aerospace innovator Impulse Space. Through a strategic $28 million contract modification, the military branch has commissioned two additional maneuverable spacecraft designed to bolster tactically responsive space missions. This expansion underscores the Pentagon's increasing reliance on commercial space agility to counter emerging orbital threats and dynamic geopolitical challenges.

Expanding the Victus Salo Program for Orbital Agility

The recent contract modification funds the development and deployment of the Victus Salo 2 and Victus Salo 3 missions. These upcoming operations will utilize Impulse Space’s advanced Mira spacecraft platform to host sensitive, government-provided payloads in low Earth orbit. This latest award brings the cumulative value of the existing contract framework to approximately $62.8 million, building upon an initial $34.8 million Small Business Innovation Research Phase 3 agreement established in 2024.

Managed collaboratively by the Space Systems Command’s Space Safari office and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), the initiative aims to fundamentally transform how military operators manage space assets. The broader Tactically Responsive Space (TacRS) framework focuses not only on rapid launch capabilities but also on agile spacecraft positioning and on-orbit maneuverability.

Technical Specifications and Strategic Significance of the Mira Platform

The core technology driving these missions is Impulse’s Mira spacecraft, a high-thrust vehicle engineered to host, deploy, and actively maneuver payloads using sophisticated chemical propulsion systems. Capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 300 kilograms, the Mira vehicle relies on eight chemical thrusters powered by nitrous oxide and ethane propellants. Having already completed three successful flight missions, the platform provides military operators with the rapid response options needed during critical orbital events.

Furthermore, the initiative encompasses ambitious projects such as the Victus Surgo mission, which will employ an Impulse Helios high-energy kick stage to transport a Mira spacecraft from low Earth orbit toward a geosynchronous transfer orbit. There, the vehicle will execute independent maneuvers, demonstrating unprecedented space mobility.

Integrating Commercial Innovation Into National Security Space Architecture

Founded in 2021 by former SpaceX propulsion executive Tom Mueller, Impulse Space has rapidly entrenched itself as a critical supplier for the Department of Defense. The company specializes in upper-stage transportation and high-performance propulsion solutions designed to operate seamlessly after a payload separates from its primary launch vehicle.

This defense integration reached another milestone when the Space Force recently inducted Impulse into the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 contract. By securing a position as an approved upper-stage provider, the startup is poised to play an even larger role in shaping the future architecture of U.S. national security space missions and ensuring strategic dominance in contested orbital environments.
