The U.S. Space Force has officially completed the deployment of two advanced space-surveillance sensors hosted aboard Japanese navigation satellites. This milestone significantly expands the military's operational capability to monitor objects in geosynchronous orbit. Operating through a unique bilateral framework, the program leverages allied spacecraft and heavy-lift launch systems to field critical U.S. national security payloads in strategically vital regions.

The QZSS-Hosted Payload Program Milestone

Japan’s advanced H3 rocket successfully launched the second surveillance sensor into orbit aboard the Quasi-Zenith Satellite 7 (QZS-7). This launch marks the culmination of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System-Hosted Payload (QZSS-HP) program. Established in December 2020 via an agreement between the U.S. Space Force and Japan’s National Space Policy Secretariat, the partnership exemplifies deep technical and military integration between the two allied nations.

The U.S.-owned space domain awareness payload was meticulously designed and constructed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Lincoln Laboratory. Before its eventual flight, the sensor underwent a rigorous two-year integration and testing process alongside its Japanese host satellite, built by Mitsubishi Electric Corp. in Kamakura, Japan.

Expanding Indo-Pacific Space Domain Awareness

Following its successful orbit insertion, the newly deployed sensor will be directly operated by Mission Delta 2, the specialized Space Force unit tasked with maintaining space domain awareness. Positioned strategically in geosynchronous orbit over the Indo-Pacific region, the payload feeds continuous observation data in near real time directly into the U.S. Space Surveillance Network. This expansive network enables the military to effectively detect, track, and characterize various objects and potential threats operating in high-altitude orbits.

This ongoing bilateral initiative represents a much deeper level of military cooperation than traditional intelligence or data sharing.
