Ukraine Scales Up Production of Domestically Built Equalizer Glide Bomb

As the ongoing conflict with Russia continues to strain resources and the reliability of foreign military assistance remains uncertain, Ukraine is aggressively expanding the procurement of its domestically produced Equalizer aerial glide bomb. Also referred to in Ukrainian as the 'Vyrivniuvach', this sophisticated standoff weapon has officially completed trials and is entering mass production to supply the Ukrainian Air Force. Developed by DG Industry with the backing of the Brave1 defense technology incubator, the Equalizer represents a critical milestone in Ukraine's pursuit of defense industrial independence and enhanced tactical strike capabilities.

Engineering and Technical Specifications of the Equalizer

The Equalizer is an unpowered glide bomb equipped with pop-out wings and advanced guidance kits designed to extend the range and accuracy of conventional munitions. According to Brave1 representatives, engineers successfully navigated immense technical challenges during its 17-month development cycle, balancing high-speed aerodynamics, intense gravitational forces, and seamless integration with tactical aircraft. The weapon carries a 250 kg warhead and relies entirely on its internal inertial navigation system and modern aerodynamics without the aid of an integrated propulsion motor. Furthermore, developers incorporated modern guidance algorithms to maximize precision against fortified enemy positions.

Strategic Imperatives and Supply Chain Independence

The primary catalyst behind the creation of the Equalizer was the pressing need to establish a secure supply chain independent of fluctuating foreign weapon donations. With international allies occasionally withholding specific types of munitions or imposing operational limitations on their employment, possessing a sovereign inventory of precision-guided weapons is vital for Kyiv. The Equalizer allows Ukrainian forces to bypass restrictions tied to foreign-supplied systems like the U.S.-made JDAM-ER or the French-supplied AASM Hammer. Additionally, producing these munitions locally shields the Ukrainian military from potential disruptions in international defense supply chains as the protracted war persists.

Compatibility with Ukrainian and Western Aircraft

Designed with broad interoperability in mind, the Equalizer can be integrated into standard Soviet-era platforms currently utilized by the Ukrainian Air Force, including Su-24, Su-27, and MiG-29 fighter and attack aircraft. Plans are also underway to certify the weapon for newly acquired Western platforms such as the F-16 and Mirage fighters provided by international partners. Because Ukrainian pilots frequently execute low-level pop-up launch profiles to evade dense Russian air defense networks along the front lines, standoff glide weapons like the Equalizer are indispensable for preserving valuable airframes while delivering decisive blows behind enemy lines.
