Ukraine Transforms Soviet-Era Armored Vehicles Into Robotic Combat Drones

In an ongoing effort to adapt to the realities of modern attrition warfare, Ukraine has initiated a project to transform Soviet-era BRDM-2 armored reconnaissance vehicles into uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs). As aerial drones dominate the airspace and render traditional frontline movements hazardous, both sides in the conflict are increasingly relying on robotic systems for tactical operations, logistics, and fire support.

Modernization and Technical Upgrades

The Central Innovation Activities Directorate of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is spearheading the effort to modernize these legacy platforms. According to military officials, the converted BRDM-2 vehicles are designed to be operated remotely from distances of up to 1,000 kilometers. Engineers are replacing the original GAZ gasoline engines with more powerful, reliable diesel powerplants from manufacturers like General Motors and Mercedes, alongside the integration of automatic transmissions.

Furthermore, the upgraded platforms will feature enhanced mine protection on the hull bottom, anti-fragmentation armor, and tubeless high-mobility tires. To ensure high survivability and mission capability, the vehicles will be equipped with secure, protected data links and robust day and night optical cameras to facilitate beyond-line-of-sight navigation and combat tasks.

Integration of Combat Modules and AI

The converted robotic vehicles will not be limited to logistics or medical evacuation roles. Plans include mounting a remotely controlled weapon station equipped with at least a 12.7mm heavy machine gun. Ukrainian defense technology initiatives emphasize that combat UGVs require advanced software to achieve maximum effectiveness on the battlefield.

Many turrets utilized by Ukrainian forces incorporate artificial intelligence and machine vision technologies. These systems assist operators with object recognition, classification, and target tracking. Communication across these multi-domain assets relies heavily on Ukraine's proprietary Delta command and control system, which serves as the digital backbone for coordinating unmanned operations.

Strategic Implications for the Front Lines

Utilizing existing stockpiles of BRDM-2 vehicles allows Ukraine to rapidly field robotic combat systems without the need to manufacture entirely new chassis from scratch. These uncrewed combat vehicles are expected to spearhead assaults on heavily fortified Russian positions, provide crucial fire support along porous defensive lines, and reduce casualties among service members.
