US Air Force Awards $766 Million for B-52 Bomber Radar Modernization

The United States Air Force has officially awarded a pair of major contracts with a combined value of $766 million aimed at advancing the B-52 radar modernization program. As the iconic Eisenhower-era strategic bomber fleet continues to face the demands of modern warfare, military leadership is heavily investing in comprehensive life-extension initiatives. These recent contract awards mark a crucial step forward in replacing aging analog sensors with cutting-edge digital radar technology, ensuring the venerable aircraft remains a viable pillar of the nuclear triad and global power projection well into the future.

Contract Breakdown and Industry Roles

According to recent Department of Defense announcements, the funding has been split between defense giant RTX and aerospace prime contractor Boeing. RTX subsidiary Raytheon secured an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract carrying a maximum ceiling of $603 million. This agreement covers the production and long-term sustainment of new radar systems designed to replace the legacy AN/APQ-166 sensors currently equipping the Stratofortress fleet.

Simultaneously, Boeing was awarded a contract valued at nearly $163 million. This portion of the funding is dedicated to delivering specialized bomb rack modernization kits. These kits are vital structural and digital components that directly support the integration efforts of the broader Radar Modernization Program (RMP), enabling the aircraft to accurately deploy modern precision-guided munitions.

Addressing Budget Growth and Schedule Challenges

Despite the strategic necessity of the upgrades, the B-52 modernization path has not been without significant friction. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports have previously highlighted substantial cost and schedule growth across both the radar overhaul and upcoming engine replacement initiatives. The radar program's budget experienced a notable 30 percent increase, pushing total projected costs past $2.9 billion and triggering a Nunn-McCurdy statutory breach.

To mitigate further delays, the Air Force adjusted its acquisition strategy, opting to purchase radars directly from RTX to streamline depot-level integration work. However, these adjustments have not come without trade-offs. To accelerate fielding timelines, service officials elected to remove certain unspecified performance thresholds, resulting in a scenario where the military ultimately accepts a slightly reduced capability profile while absorbing higher program costs. Current estimates indicate the modernized radar system will achieve initial operational capability by the third quarter of fiscal 2030.

Mitigating Setbacks and Future Flight Testing

The modernization initiative also faced a tragic operational setback when a flight test aircraft assigned to the program crashed near Edwards Air Force Base in California, resulting in the loss of eight crew members. While a comprehensive mishap investigation remains underway, program officials continue to evaluate the long-term impacts on testing schedules. The Air Force plans to modify a second test aircraft this year to resume crucial flight trials, prioritizing safety reviews while working to keep the overarching fleet revitalization on track.
