The United States Army has officially initiated a broader outreach effort to identify alternative solutions for replacing the legacy FIM-92 Stinger short-range heat-seeking surface-to-air missile system. While the service has already been funding development work on two competing designs from defense giants Lockheed Martin and Raytheon under the Next-Generation Short-Range Interceptor (NGSRI) program since 2023, recent contracting announcements signal a push for expanded industry participation. The military's objective is to procure a massive inventory of 11,000 NGSRI missiles alongside 2,200 new man-portable launchers, with initial fielding slated to begin in Fiscal Year 2028.

A successful showing by competing offerors during this live demonstration could potentially lead to lucrative missile procurement awards. The urgency behind replacing the decades-old Stinger is heavily driven by the proliferation of tactical drones on modern battlefields. Specifically, the NGSRI must be capable of defeating Group 2 and Group 3 unmanned aerial systems—categories that include loitering munitions like the Iranian-designed Shahed-136. Despite these advanced technological demands, a critical prerequisite for the new missile is absolute backwards compatibility with existing Stinger launch platforms. This includes mobile air defense systems such as the Army's Stryker-based Sgt.
