In a major strategic push to guarantee uninterrupted power for critical military operations, the U.S. Army has selected five private defense and energy firms to develop on-base nuclear microreactors. This initiative, valued at up to $2.2 billion combined, forms the core of the Army's Janus program. By breaking away from absolute reliance on civilian electrical grids, the military seeks to protect its core installations from cyberattacks, sabotage, and kinetic threats during a geopolitical crisis.

Strategic Objectives of the Janus Program

The primary driver behind the Janus program is the growing recognition that domestic and international energy infrastructures are highly vulnerable during modern warfare. Traditional military installations rely heavily on commercial grids and diesel generators for backup power. However, supplying diesel fuel in contested environments poses massive logistical burdens, particularly in Pacific outposts or during overseas deployments. The deployment of microreactors is designed to provide secure, reliable baseload power directly to high-priority installations, ensuring that power projection capabilities remain uncompromised.

Selected Contractors and Technical Implementations

The Army, in close collaboration with the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), has assigned specific installations to five industry leaders:

  • Antares Nuclear: Fort Bragg, North Carolina
  • BWXT Advanced Technologies: Fort Campbell, Kentucky
  • General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems: Fort Hood, Texas
  • Radiant Industries: Fort Benning, Georgia
  • Westinghouse Government Services: Fort Drum, New York

These projects leverage innovative, transportable reactor designs. For instance, Radiant Industries is advancing its 1-megawatt Kaleidos microreactors, which are designed to be plug-in ready and easily transportable. Meanwhile, General Atomics is promoting its Tactical Energy System (GA-TES), capable of scaling output up to 20 megawatts and transportable via standard rail or truck logistics.

Safety, Operations, and Future Milestones

Military officials emphasized that none of the future base reactors will utilize weapons-grade highly enriched uranium, significantly lowering proliferation and safety risks. The systems will be contractor-owned and operated, ensuring that vendors are only compensated upon meeting strict technical milestones. While these microreactors will not entirely replace commercial grids during peacetime, they establish an independent safety buffer designed to sustain vital command, control, and power-projection missions under hostile conditions.
