US Space Force and Japan Launch New Sensor to Bolster Indo-Pacific Surveillance

In a significant milestone for bilateral military cooperation, the U.S. Space Force and Japan have successfully expanded their space surveillance capabilities. A specialized Space Domain Awareness payload was launched into orbit on August 10 aboard Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite 7 (QZS-7). Blasting off from the Tanegashima Space Center via a Japanese H3 rocket, this mission marks the completion of a pioneering national security space partnership aimed at integrating American sensor technology onto Japanese navigation satellites.

Enhancing Geosynchronous Orbit Surveillance

The newly deployed sensor is designed to provide near-real-time data directly to the U.S. Space Surveillance Network. Operating at an altitude of approximately 22,000 miles in geosynchronous orbit—where satellites match the Earth's rotation to remain stationary over a specific point—the payload significantly upgrades the Space Force's domain awareness. Combat Forces Command’s Mission Delta 2 will operate the sensor to track orbital objects, identify potential threats, and maintain comprehensive custody of assets in deep space.

This initiative stems from a foundational agreement established in December 2020 between the Space Force and Japan’s National Space Policy Secretariat. Defense officials have emphasized that the program underscores the rapid modernization and enduring strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance in increasingly contested operational environments.

Strategic Implications for the Indo-Pacific

As near-peer competitors increasingly contest the orbital domain, establishing resilient and interoperable capabilities has become a top priority for Washington and Tokyo.
